Arts, meet Health – Health, meet Arts.

This was the motto for the 2019 IADMS (International Association of Dance Medicine and Science) conference in Montreal where I had the pleasure of both attending and presenting on the topic of Managing Scoliosis in Dance using Pilates and Schroth Method.

“Dance for Health” interventions across the globe was the big focus of the convention. I learned how they are increasingly implemented in Europe and North America for a variety of populations including those with neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s and MS, mental health concerns and developmental challenges. The programs follow evidence-based protocols and are based on well established, measurable outcomes with huge therapeutic benefits. Did you know that here at Trimetrics we run Pilates for Parkinson’s programs?

Naturally with Cirque du Soleil’s headquarters in Montreal, Circus Acrobatic was another big topic. I heard an excellent presentation by the head of the Performance Medicine department of Cirque du Soleil on the unique demands and challenges faced by both the artists of Cirque and the Performance Medicine department alike. I had not quite appreciated the size and complexity of what is Cirque du Soleil.

Hypermobility – another hot topic with interesting presentations and workshops on the huge spectrum of hypermobility disorders, the fear avoidance model of chronic pain as well as strategies of working with clients with hypermobility.
