These disorders include epilepsy, Alzheimer disease and other dementias, cerebrovascular diseases including stroke, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, neuroinfections, brain tumours, traumatic disorders of the nervous system due to head trauma, and neurological disorders as a result of malnutrition (WHO 2016).
Neurological disorders can cause pain, joint stiffness, muscle weakness and the loss of control of movement and balance. Often these Individuals will have difficulty maintaining a good posture and compensatory movement patterns are often used, therefore pain may be experienced.
How can Pilates help people with Neurological disorders?
Pilates is a whole body exercise incorporating strengthening and flexibility exercises that focus on the coordination of the body and mind. Strengthening core muscles and shoulder stability through guided exercises on the mat or reformer will aim to improve balance, stability and control of movement. Improving the length and flexibility of tight muscles that contribute to muscle imbalance can help promote normal movement, control of movement and reduce pain.
If you are interested in Clinical Pilates for Neurological Conditions: please phone or email the clinic to ask for a screening form.
