Perfect Health Retreat : Chopra Center June 2016
Over the years I have enjoyed many conversations with my patients around the work of Dr Deepak Chopra www.deepakchopra.com.
I have always found his philosophy known as Ayurveda, to be very appealing since it integrates health of body mind and spirit in practical and achievable ways. I recently decided to commit to it at a deeper level by beginning the process to become a Chopra certified Meditation Teacher. To this end, I have just returned from a week of immersion in Ayurveda at the Chopra Centre, known as Perfect Health and thought I would share for those interested.
Ayurveda is a 5,000-year-old system of natural healing that has its origins in the Vedic culture of India. Although suppressed during years of foreign occupation, Ayurveda has been enjoying a major resurgence in both its native land and throughout the world. Tibetan medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine both have their roots in Ayurveda. Early Greek medicine also embraced many concepts originally described in the classical Ayurvedic medical texts dating back thousands of years. Today much of the Ayurvedic knowledge is being validated by western science. The concept of the “ micro biome diet “ which is current at the moment, was central to the Ayurveda philosophy.

The Perfect Health program is an opportunity to fully reset mind, body and spirit under the excellent guidance of Chopra Centre medical doctors fully trained in Ayurveda. A core principal of this approach is to achieve the daily balance for which we are all physiologically hardwired. Life events, stresses, short and long term illness, thoughts and habits can all disturb that inner balance. Often we are not even aware it until we are hit with a physical illness or that sense of being run down, off balance and exhausted: feelings, which are so often precursors to illness.
The intention of this program is to identify and then release and detoxify accumulated body and mind habits, thoughts and stresses and reset the balance system. Deepak has always been focused on prevention over cure, and using self-awareness and self-knowledge to tap into that inner wisdom.
My group of 16 people started each day directed lovingly by Wendi Cohen the program director. Our week was tailored exactly to our individual needs and imbalances by the Chopra physicians who are Western trained and also certified in Ayurveda .We enjoyed a routine of gentle yoga classes, group meditation and instruction, delicious light but satisfying meals. We had several classes a day with Chopra faculty staff, to learn about the principals of meditation and Ayurvedic nutrition tailored to each person’s dosha or mind- body type. The highlight had to be daily ayurvedic body treatments known as Abyhanga.
This ancient Indian Ayurvedic oil body therapy for healing and detoxifying body, mind and spirit. This ayurvedic detox and stress reduction therapy is performed by massaging an aromatic combination of warm oils exactly matched to your dosha type, into the skin from head to toe.
Trust me when I say it’s a unique and divine experience delivered with the care and skill of the Chopra therapists. Participants in Perfect Health receive one Abyhanga treatment per day, each one with a different emphasis. This treatment integrates beautifully with all the other aspects of the detox and rebalancing work I experienced. The Chopra staff set an atmosphere of peace, calm and great care for each of us.
My group of 16 was comprised of several physicians, a mother /daughter, a mother /son, a stand up comedian and his partner, a well known US high- tech visionary, a wonderful young girl with her service dog Tonka who gave us all great love with his gentle affection, and several others like myself from various walks of life. The range of issues participants were seeking help with ranged from post cancer care, chronic inflammatory diseases to chronic stress. The physicians present were like myself, there for personal reset but also to expand our own personal knowledge with a view to integration into our own lives and medical practices.
Over the week our group connected slowly at first, and then gradually at a deep level. One of the members found an excellent app called Insight Timer www.insighttimer.com which connects almost a million meditators around the world.
He created a group there for us so we can continue to chat and support each other in our mediation practice. I have really been enjoying it since it connects individuals and groups to each other. Since meditation can be a solitary experience, its cool to see after a 20 minute mediation the faces of the 2000+ others around the world using the app have been mediating with you at the same time!
Deepak has always been focused on prevention over cure and using self -awareness and self- knowledge to tap into that inner wisdom that is free and available to us all regardless of life circumstances. I would wholeheartedly recommend this program for anyone seeking a comprehensive and evidence based health reset: I see so many patients friends and family members who have “ survived “ cancer treatment, trauma and personal loss but still left in a state of great imbalance physically and mentally. Wonderful as our health system is when we need it to save lives of course, but it leaves the individuals a shadow of themselves and basically left to “ get on with it “ This program would be the greatest self-care for any person who has been through a health challenge physically or mentally.
I can say the greatest gift of this program for me was to reconnect with that great inner power through meditation and self-awareness, and use it to stay healthy in mind, body and spirit. Deepak reminds us that we are part of a greater collective consciousness: may not be able to fix the world but we can most definitely influence it with our own health choices especially meditation.
